Recycling turns materials that would otherwise become waste into valuable resources and generates a host of environmental, financial, and social benefits. It takes 95% less energy to recycle an aluminium can than to make a new one. All waste that is not recycled is either incinerated (releasing toxic fumes into the air) or sent to a landfill site (which causes environmental damage and contaminates land). After collection, materials (e.g., glass, metal, plastics, and paper) are separated and sent to facilities that can process them into new materials or products.
Benefits of Recycling
Conserves resources for our children's future.
Prevents emissions of many greenhouse gases and water pollutants.
Saves energy.
Supplies valuable raw materials to industry.
Creates jobs.
Stimulates the development of greener technologies.
Reduces the need for new landfills and incinerators.
Composting
Another form of recycling is composting. Composting is the controlled biological decomposition of organic matter, such as kitchen and garden wastes, into humus, a soil-like material. Composting is nature's way of recycling organic wastes into new soil used in vegetable and flower gardens, landscaping, and many other applications.
By composting you can produce free soil improving compost to use back on the garden. Valuable nutrients can be returned to the soil in the garden improving the structure of the soil and making it healthier. Organic waste such as fruit/vegetable peelings and garden waste makes up over 30% what you throw away so residents are helping to reduce waste.
